A hands-on workshop. Learn to bring serenity, excitement, and enjoyment to your life through the 1700-year-old tradition of East Asian Calligraphy. This workshop will teach you to engage your learning and creative processes through exploring ancient Chinese masterpieces and practicing calligraphy techniques. Basic brushwork techniques and aesthetics will be taught, and participants will also experiment with artistic interpretation and expressionistic improvisation, using and building upon techniques learned in the workshop. No previous experience is required; materials will be provided.

Kazuaki Tanahashi, born and trained in Japan, is an internationally-recognized artist, writer, and peace worker. As a painter and calligrapher, Kaz has had solo exhibitions of his brushwork, and has performed and taught worldwide. He has created a genre of one-stroke paintings and multi-color Zen circles. As a calligrapher in East Asian style, he creates works of large single ideographs. Samples of his work will be on display and available for purchase at this workshop. Kaz is also a noted Zen scholar and translator who has done important translations of work by Eihei Dogen.
