Dr. Zachary Schrag Discusses The Great Society Subway at the Trolley Museum
The National Capital Trolley Museum welcomes Dr. Zachary Schrag, author of The Great Society Subway: A History of the Washington Metro, on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 1 p.m. as he discusses his research and preparation of this new book. Copies are available in the Museum Shop for $30.00. Arguing that Metro is best understood as the concrete manifestation of Great Society ideals, The Great Society Subway: A History of the Washington Metro (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2006), examines the politics, planning, engineering, architecture, finance, and operations of the nation's second-largest rail transit system. An earlier version received the Society for American City and Regional Planning History's 2003 John Reps Prize for the best dissertation in the field completed in the previous two years. Having published articles in The Journal of Urban History, Technology and Culture and Washington History plus book reviews in several academic journals, Dr. Schrag has received grants and fellowships from Columbia University, the National Science Foundation, and the Gerald Ford Foundation, and has taught at George Washington University; Baruch College, City University of New York, and Columbia University . In August 2004, he joined the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University as an assistant professor of history.

Visitors may also ride on a selection of street cars and trams from the Museum's collections. Rides on the demonstration railway are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children ages 2-17 and for seniors ages 65+.

The Trolley Museum is located in Northwest Branch Park, 1313 Bonifant Road, between Layhill Road and New Hampshire Avenue, north of Wheaton, MD.
