Youth Music Monterey

Teaming up with the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony for their final performance of the 2009-2010 season, Youth Music Monterey is going out with a bang. The joint orchestras will tackle George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, one of the late composers most famous works. It boisterously chronicles the journey of a young person through the glitz and glamour of France, capturing the exuberance of youth and romanticism of the City of Lights. Following with another knock out of the classical repertoire, the blooming musicians play Alexander Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances, taken from his epic opera Prince Igor. Mellower but no less mesmerizing than Gershwin, Borodin’s piece follows the dance of slaves brought before the captured Prince Igor to entertain and tantalize him in his conqueror’s palace. The concert also will showcase the Youth Orchestra performing spectacular selections including Emma Lou Diemer’s Youth Overture, Dvorak’s New World Symphony, Berlioz’s March to The Scaffold, and Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave. As the players take on the greats, audience members might just leave having been schooled by teenagers. [MF, Monterey County Weekly Staff Writer]
