'You Took Away My Flag: a Musical About Kosovo,' explores the impact of such vicious nationalism on the lives of ordinary families during the same time that the Srebrenica Massacre was taking place. After Srebrenica and the wind down of the war in Bosnia, Slobodan Milosevic, popularly elected as Serbia's president, directed his full attention to Kosovo, demonizing the majority Albanian population there as terrorists, fundamentalists, and primitive. His forces butchered more men and boys, burned houses, killed livestock, and expelled some 800,000 Albanians from their homes. 'You Took Away My Flag' shows how a young Albanian teenager and his older sister responded, both determined to realize their very different dreams despite the political storm raging around them. This rock opera, shows the power of the human spirit to surprise those who underestimate it, celebrates different kinds of bravery, and recognizes that dreams, even when realized, usually are accompanied by seeds of potential destruction.
