You Gotta Hear This! Rootstock & Sqwonk October 17, 2010

This month's "You Gotta Hear This!": Loren Mach (ADORNO Ensemble), Christopher Froh (San Francisco Contemporary Music Players), Daniel Kennedy (San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Gamelan Sekar Jaya)--three of the Bay Area's top mallet men--join forces for a vivacious journey into the Orchestra's rhythm section. PLUS: Bass clarinet duo Sqwonk bring their unique combination of heavy reeds to explore rock, klezmer, minimalism, free improvisation, and more.

In the tradition of the classic radio variety show (think "From the Top" and "Prairie Home Companion"), the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra presents "You Gotta Hear This!"--a showcase of the best live music from around the Bay, at the plush Rrazz Room at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco--hosted by our very own Ben Simon!

This fun, new chamber music series joins the well-established "Classical at the Freight" as part of the Chamber Orchestra's "Up Close & Personal" series--taking classical music out of the traditional concert hall and into the coffeehouses and jazz clubs! We hope you'll join us for new adventures in classical music!

Featuring top performing talent from the Bay Area's world-class conservatories, orchestras, and ensembles, "You Gotta Hear This!" brings fresh sounds across musical styles and genres--classical, jazz, acoustic, pop, international, and more. All this, plus lively, bright, and informative conversation with musicians and composers, as well as classical-music quizzes, games, and contests that bring the audience right into the action!
