Yoshi's Spotlight on Schools: Vacaville Christian High School's RADIO JAZZ
June 30, 2010

8pm show $15

Radio Jazz is a big band, but not in the conventional sense. On stage with Radio Jazz you’ll find saxophones a trombone, drums, bass and piano, but also an oboe, a little girl’s music box, 2 Theremins, a 1930’s style radio, a Tesla Coil, a broken phonograph, an electric drill and some of the most interesting sounds dreamed up from the fertile minds of young musicians. It’s not random --- everything has its place and the music is thought provoking, entertaining and immensely beautiful.

Radio Jazz is in its 6th year and in that time they have collaborated and performed with such noted artists as Junior Mance, Beth Custer, Don Byron, Peter Appelbaum, Charlie Hunter, Jeff Cressman, George Colligan, Dafnis Prieto, and Yosvany Terry. In that time this imaginative band has been featured at the Other Minds Festival of New Music in San Francisco; won an Outstanding High School Performance award from DownBeat Magazine for their “Principles of Guided Musical Design” project; and accompanied silent films with their Radio Symphony counterpart prompting the mayor of Vacaville to proclaim a day in their honor. Most recently Radio Jazz scored an original radio play for broadcast.
This concert at Yoshi’s will include music from their new album project recorded at Fantasy Studios, called Jazz from Space, set for release in June. It will also feature music from some of their previous album projects, Techno Ruins, Duck and Cover and Principles of Guided Musical Design.
