The Bay Area’s Kronos Quartet is perhaps the most celebrated string quartet in the world. YBCA presents Music Without Borders, a full weekend of international artistic explorations. The weekend kicks off on Thu, Jul 31 with a screening of Half Moon in YBCA’s Screening Room at 7:30 pm. The film follows an iconic Kurdish musician in the twilight of his life who travels to Iraq for a concert to celebrate the fall of Saddam Hussein and the end of repression of Kurdish music. Kronos’ solo performance on Fri, Aug 1 at 8 pm in the Novellus Theater features music from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, India and Kazakhstan. On Sat, Aug 2 at 3:30 pm in YBCA’s Screening Room, a free listening party (with gallery admission) with Kronos Quartet’s David Harrington features an eclectic selection of recordings, providing insight into his creative process and the expansive world of sounds that provide inspiration. The listening party is followed by a free screening (with gallery admission) of Breaking the Silence: Music in Afghanistan in the YBCA Screening Room at 5:00 pm. The film, directed by Simon Broughton, examines the recovery of music in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s prohibition of music was lifted. Then at 8 pm that evening in the Novellus Theater, Kronos performs with rubâb player Homayoun Sakhi in the world premiere of a composition co-commissioned by YBCA.
