Johann Strauss Jr, acclaimed as "The Waltz King" of Vienna, wrote hundreds of waltzes, polkas and gallops, and several operettas. Of all his stage works one stands out as perhaps the greatest operetta written: 'Die Fledermaus'. Based on a French play by Meilhac and Halevy (who had also provided Offenbach with many libretti for his operettas), it was an instant success and has remained so to this day. The famous overture and Rosalinde's 'Czardas' are just as popular today as they were at the premiere in 1874.
