Write of Passage: A Journey into Boyle Heights

Write of Passage: A Journey into Boyle Heights is a class whose purpose is to train participants, especially the youth of Boyle Heights, to develop their communication skills through writing and acting.

The class fee is $10. Recommended ages are 14 to 25 but the class is open to all. There will be no class Thanksgiving Day, nor the weeks of Christmas and New Year.

What rites of passage do young people confront in today?s world? The class will focus on producing one complete body of work, (play, short story, screenplay, essay, poem etc.), which will explore broadly this notion of ?rites of passage?. Participants will also receive acting training, focusing on the work created in the classroom. The class will culminate with a public performance the weekend of January 21st 2005. Thus the class will in itself become a rite of passage as participants will go from creating an original work, to expressing it with their own voice before an invited audience.
