It's not a big topic in the debates, but it's going to be a big topic for an Obama presidency. The "world food crisis" is not for third world countries alone. Food banks in the U.S. are starting to get requests for help from the hungry by email for the first time. The middle class - people who own computers - are now hungry, contacting food banks for help. Demand for food usually goes down in the summer, but this year it didn't.

This isn't the only food-related topic that matters politically. We can easily use agriculture to dramatically curb global warming, but not with the current USDA (bought and paid for by corporations dependent on the status quo). And then there's food safety. The FDA couldn't find the source of the salmonella outbreak for over a month in 2008.

So let's use Obama's site to organize around food issues. I've been active on food issues for a few years now, and I've started writing for Alternet fairly recently. I'd be glad to share my knowledge with others in the San Diego area. Let's start a conversation about what we want to see once Obama wins.
