Pablo Vargas Lugo's WorkSpace project, Eclipses for Austin, explores solar eclipses as important collective rituals. Total eclipses of the sun provoke astonishment, anxiety, hope, joy and fear and compel those who witness them to reassess their place in the world. For Lugo's project, 500 people will gather in the university's Derrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium to stage the next ten solar eclipses that will occur in Texas over the course of 340 years. In a carefully choreographed performance, participants will hold up black and white cards to create a picture of each eclipse. The performance will be documented on video and in a newspaper that visitors will be able to keep. Ultimately, the work seeks to address a sense of belonging that a collective activity can inspire in a group - even one made up of diverse members.
