We inform you that during the period May 24 – May 29, 2009, a



Workshop on Finsler Geometry and its Applications on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the late academician Ottó Varga’s birthday



will be held in Debrecen, Hungary, organized by the Department of Geometry, University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary, in cooperation with the Debrecen Branch of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.



The arrival day is 24th of May, Sunday, and the departure day is 29th of May, Friday. The scientific program (May 25 – May 28) is devoted to lectures given by the participants on various fields of Finsler geometry, their generalizations, and applications in physics, biology, control theory, finance, psychometry, etc. This event is intended to continue the series of workshops on Finsler geometry (Seattle 1995, Edmonton 1998, Iasi 2001, Berkeley 2002, Debrecen 2003, Tianjin 2004, Balatonföldvár 2007) and the Finsler Symposiums held yearly in Japan.



On behalf of the organizers we have the pleasure to invite you to this workshop. We would be glad if you contributed to the success of the workshop by a lecture, or simply by taking part in the discussions.

The place of the workshop: Debrecen, Center of Debrecen Branch of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.



The program of the workshop will be organized as follows: The participants are asked to announce the topics of their planned talks at pre-registration. From these the Advisory Board will select the priority themes which will be in the focus of the workshop. For each we plan to devote half a day in the program. The priority themes will be given in the Second Announcement. The speakers will be asked to advise some papers/literature for studying the topics in advance. These will be advertised on the home page of the workshop. - Any other short talk is welcome and will be included in the program.



Participation fee is EUR 100 per person and EUR 60 for accompanying persons. This fee covers the expenses of the organization, the abstracts and some social events (welcome reception, farewell party and excursions). The location of the Workshop is Debrecen, the second biggest town of Hungary, situated in the eastern part of the country. The distance of Debrecen from the capital, Budapest is 220 kilometres, and the town can be reached smoothly by intercity trains, or by car. The conference site is the Center of the Debrecen Branch of Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
