Each month at the WBE Breakfast we have an inspirational speaker and our speaker for April 2011 is:

Sue Rahr, King County Sheriff
"The Courage to Lead"

Sheriff Sue Rahr doesn't consider courage to be something you're born with. Nor does she think that it just happens. Rahr believes courage is a decision.

Rahr has been a law enforcement officer for 31 years, so she's intimately familiar with courage. But as she progressed through her career, she found the physical risks to be less difficult to deal with than the emotional risks inherent in being a leader. Rahr believes courage isn't defined by the absence of fear (she calls that simple stupidity). To her, courage is the deliberate act of recognizing the risk in taking an action, and making the choice to face down the fear-then going forward with the action.

Inspired in part by a speech from Theodore Roosevelt, Rahr's talk will urge women who want to make a difference in the world to examine the concept of courage. How might it help you grow, take action, and lead?

At WBE's April 14 breakfast, Rahr will share stories of frightening moments as a cop that illustrate why she has well thought-out beliefs about courage and leadership for women. Find out how her experiences and wisdom led to her belief that "fear of fists and bullets is transitory; fear of humiliation and embarrassment goes much deeper and lasts longer."
