Melbourne’s finest noiseniks, Witch Hats, return with their highly anticipated second long player, ‘Pleasure Syndrome’. Recorded with Casey Rice (Tortoise, Dirty Three), it is their most concise musical statement to date.
A mixture of primal pop, post-punk, swamp rock, avant-noise and gothic-noir, five decades of music can be heard distilled within the sound of this fuzzy foursome. At the heart of it though, Witch Hats are a rock band. And they write great songs. And the new album is their most tuneful record yet, full of cracking melodies and great riffs.
Witch Hats debuted in 2005, playing in squats and parks. When they moved to clubs and venues, they were often shut down due to excessive noise. But they always left people hunting for adjectives, superlatives and sometimes expletives.
Their debut album, 2008’s raw, primitive and hugely acclaimed ‘Cellulite Soul’, was produced by The Birthday Party’s Phil Calvert.
‘Pleasure Syndrome’ is the sound of a brash young band grown a little older, possibly wiser, and certainly more musically adroit. Still comfortably out-of-step with their contemporaries, Witch Hats are the self-ascribed antidote to a world that canonises vacuous celebrity and the disposable lifestyle.
