Saint John, New Brunswick E2L 5A5

Saint John Arts Centre offers something new for the creative adventurer! Any canoeist or budding canoeist who dreams winter-dreams of quiet mysterious rivers will enjoy this five-week course given by Evan Young, Canoe NB certified instructor, and owner of Gibson Creek Canoeing. In a relaxed setting, Evan will introduce you to the theory and fundamentals of the sport, emphasizing NB resources and several different river and lake trips available in New Brunswick, with pictures and access information. Come and share information about your favorite canoe route. Learn about knots for canoeists, gear and safety issues, different paddling styles, and strokes... all information that may complement your current abilities, and move you into future disciplines like white water, freestyle, racing and poling... and help you decide what to buy. Pictures and some discussion of the history of this unique craft and its place in our cultural history are used to help establish the mood of the river, even in winter. A video or two and contributions from a poet and from a yoga instructor will complement the discussion and get you thinking about the mystery and the physical demands of canoeing. The theory component earns you a discount if you take a GC skills certification class on-water.
