SWINGS INTO CHICAGO IN APRIL CELEBRATING THE
100th ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN, JOHN CARTER & EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS!
12th Annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention Rockets into the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center from April 27th - 29th, 2012
Lombard, IL/ -Jungle Lords, Martian Maids, Venusian Warriors and the many other immortal characters that sprang from the pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs will be honored along with all the other larger than life heroes of the pulps at the 12th annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, set to unfold at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center from Friday, April 27th to Sunday, April 29th, 2012.
The three-day event draws hundreds of aficionados from across the country to celebrate this uniquely American form of popular literature. Attendees hear from pulp-fiction historians, see original vintage pulp art displays, watch films adapted from the great pulp stories, bid on rare pulps and pop culture artifacts and peruse over 100 tables of hard-to-find collectibles including rare issues of such seminal publications as Adventure, Astounding, Black Mask, Doc Savage, The Shadow, Spicy Detective, Weird Tales, and thousands more!
The pulp magazine, which thrived in the years between the two World Wars, vied with radio and the movies as the era’s most popular form of mass entertainment. These periodicals, printed on coarse pulpwood paper and boasting eye-grabbing, often lurid cover paintings, introduced to the American reading public such immortal writers as Dashiell Hammett, Zane Grey, Raymond Chandler, Ray Bradbury, L. Ron Hubbard, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, and Robert Heinlein. The pulps are widely recognized as the inspirations for such pop-culture mainstays as Star Trek, Star Wars, and virtually every comic-book hero from Batman to Spider-Man to Zorro (who originated in the pulps).
This year’s convention celebrates the 100th anniversary of the grand master of all pulp writers, Edgar Rice Burroughs. The famed creator of Tarzan didn't put pen to paper until he was 37. Then a low paid clerk with a family to support, Burroughs - having read his fair share of pulp fiction - famously said, “If these authors can make money selling this rot, so can I.” In short order, Burroughs wrote the novel, Under the Moons of Mars, the first installment in the John Carter series, which was published in the Feb. 1912 issue of All Story Magazine. Later that year (Oct. 1912) he followed up with the landmark action fantasy, and seminal pulp creation Tarzan of the Apes.
Over the next 100 years, Burroughs characters and story lines have been continuously adapted into films, television shows, video games, plays, comics and virtually every other medium. The most recent adaptation is Disney's big budget screen version of his Mars stories, John Carter (the name of the swashbuckling hero of the novels). The amazing timelessness of the Burroughs creations attests to his standing as one of the most influential pop culture authors of all time.
Burroughs' incredible legacy and his most famous creations, Tarzan and John Carter, will be honored at this year's convention. Programming includes panels led by pulp historians, an art show featuring rarely seen original cover paintings to many of the magazines that featured Burroughs works and rarely seen motion pictures adapting stories and characters created by Burroughs and other famous pulp scribes.
Other attractions include:
*100+ table dealer showroom boasting one of the world’s largest assemblies of vintage pulp, paperback, old time-radio, movie memorabilia, and related collectibles. Affordable reprints, hard-to-find books, fanzines and original artwork will also be offered for sale on FRIDAY-SATURDAY-SUNDAY.
*Friday and Saturday Night auction of rare, much-sought-after pulp magazines, pulp art, and memorabilia including many almost impossible to find pulps, books and related ephemera including many items associated with Burroughs and the golden age of pulp fiction and pulp art.
*Pulp Film Festival will screen titles adapted from the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs including rarely seen features and serials chronicling the exploits of the fabled Jungle Lord. Highlights include the complete 1929 chapterplay, TARZAN THE TIGER and the fabled 1918 feature which first brought Tarzan to the screen, TARZAN OF THE APES. Films will run throughout the day and night on both FRIDAY and SATURDAY.

ADMISSION is $35.00 for all three days; $25.00 on Friday; $25.00 on Saturday; $15.00 on Sunday. Ages 13 and under admitted free with parent. Fee includes access to all convention events and souvenir program book containing pulp articles and reprints.
