The Honorable William T. Coleman, the venerable civil rights lawyer, was the first black American to clerk for the Supreme Court. In his extraordinary career, Coleman, winner of the 1995 Presidential Medal of Freedom, served on the historic Brown v. Board of Education case, was a senior counsel to the Warren Commission, and was appointed Secretary of Transportation by President Ford.
