With Thailand's ban on logging in 1989, elephants and their keepers have lost a crucial source of employment and means of survival. While loss of habitat creates an additional challenge to the survival of elephants, one project in northern Thailand experiments with returning elephants to the forest to see whether they can form new family groups and survive on their own.
