Where Are We Now? A Day in the Life of a Volatile World Economy April 12, 2012

The global economy is in serious flux—that much we know. But what exactly is happening? International economist Jeffrey Garten will provide a snapshot of where the global economy stands today and speak to the consequences of the change swirling around us. In doing so, he'll explore context for the role of emerging markets in this upended system. The dust may never settle, but these changes are already influence how Mercy Corps works to alleviate poverty and will continue to affect our relationships with public and private sectors around the globe.

Currently a professor at Yale, Garten formerly served as dean of the Yale School of Management for a decade, held senior positions in four presidential administrations, and was managing director of Lehman Brothers and the Blackstone Group. Earning a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University, Garten went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne Division and the U.S. Special Forces.

Garten is also chairman of Garten Rothkopf, a global consulting firm which he co-founded in October 2005. The company’s focus is on helping global companies and organizations deal with major transformational trends, such as new pressures on natural resources; strains on the environment; the expansion of multinational companies from emerging market economies; and the pressures of growing indebtedness in the West and Japan. Garten Rothkopf has a special focus on translating policy trends and decisions into commercial implications for senior business leaders, as well as building scenarios for unexpected developments of significant magnitude.

Garten is married to Ina Garten, author of the Barefoot Contessa cookbooks and host of the "Barefoot Contessa" TV program, and lives in New York and Connecticut.
