What Were Roman Emperors Really Called? Coins as Models of Dissemination April 30, 2009

Several hundred cities in the Roman Empire struck coins for the early Roman emperors, and they chose to put different names and titles for each ruler. An examination of the choices they made can establish what people actually called the emperors and what models of dissemination must have applied. The same models can be used in other fields, especially portrait sculpture.
