Amidst news of renewed violence in the Middle East, it is easy to forget the deep and varied significance that Israel holds for a diverse array of people. Drawing on emotion and intellect, religion and politics, culture and spirit, the 80 Jewish and non-Jewish authors in this collection reflect on their personal connections with the land, the concept and the state of Israel. This wide-ranging anthology is edited by Alan Dershowitz, professor of law at Harvard Law School and author of The New York Times best-sellers Chutzpah and The Case for Israel. Contributing authors from the Washington DC area join in an open, thought-provoking conversation about their connections to this beguiling, challenging and inspiring place.

Stuart Eizenstat is the former United States Ambassador to the European Union. Amitai Etzioni directs the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies at The George Washington University. Charles Fenyvesi is a veteran reporter of Ha’aretz, The Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report. Max Kampelman was U.S. ambassador to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Aviva Kempner is a filmmaker and writer. Daniel Mariaschin is the executive vice president of B’nai B’rith International.
