The online world means that reputations are being built, and destroyed, on blogs, review sites, message boards and now twitter. Your search ranking might plausibly be described as a reputation index. But has the PR industry moved fast enough to cope?
Communications have become democratised and where, historically, there might have been a couple of dozen journalists to contact in any given sector, there is now an army of millions of active commentators. The age of reputation management through lunch with the editor has ended.
So is there still an argument for a space for PR in the boardroom? The emergence of new skill sets around search, analytics and social media means that new players are jockeying for position and claim a better understanding of the world of new media communications. Is PR past its prime?
This event will take the form of a debate, although with a tweaked format to allow plenty of audience participation.
There will be partially-free drinking and plenty of space for argument after the debate.
