WESTHEIMER BLOCK PARTY RETURNS
Arts- Music- Subversion

It's that 'special' time again—the fall festival season, when the temperature in Houston occasionally dips below ninety, St. Arnold's starts bottling Christmas Ale, and people who can't even pronounce 'gyros' come to the annual Greek Festival to pay twice the going rate for some. For long-time residents of Montrose, it's also a good time of year for a street festival—or maybe just a block party.

They say that 'the third time's a charm'. That being the case, expect to be charmed, beguiled and amazed as FREE PRESS HOUSTON proudly presents the third semi-annual WESTHEIMER BLOCK PARTY. Inspired by the legendary Westheimer Street Festival, last May's block party drew more than 4,000 attendees—attracted by the unique combination of live music, guerrilla art, food and booze.

On SATURDAY NOVEMBER 4TH, the party returns. In addition to 30+ bands (see complete list below), the November Block Party will also host a wide range of other 'events within the event'--not least among them, Houston's first-ever BIKE RIDE ART SHOW (expect the art to be literally 'moving', whether it moves you or not).

Block Party Art Director Sean Carroll has also secured presentations by ART SCOUTS and THE LOLLIPAUPPERZ, as well as live painting by THE MEXICAN ARSENAL. For art of a more graphic nature, be sure to visit the THIRD ANNUAL HOUSTON COMIC AND ZINE FESTIVAL in the parking lot of HELIOS (411 Westheimer) for a full fix of comix, zines and other small press publications.

Independent artists are strongly encouraged to bring their works to display, as space will be provided. Just bring a table and show up at 411 Westheimer with a small table and take part in the free for all.

This year’s party reaches from the intersection of WESTHEIMER and TAFT eastward to BAGBY, deep in the heart of Montrose. Participating venues include NUMBER'S, MANGO'S, HELIOS, LATE NITE PIE, LA STRADA, and SACRED HEART TATTOO, others TBA. Sponsors include KTRU FM 91.7, HOUSTON INDYMEDIA, LIQUID, and SUPER HAPPY FUNLAND.

Participating bands/DJs include Penny Royal, Studemont Project, Umbrella Man, Bring Back The Guns, The Riff Tiffs, Guy Schwartz, Bullets on Broadway, Medicine Show, Playground, Million Year Dance, Los Skarnales, Bring Back the Guns, Generic Tribe, The Low Ends, Poison Apple Martini, Free Radicals, All in Your Head, Deep Above Surface, Generation Landslide, Honeysuckle, Make Your Own Maps, Novice,The Last Starfighter, Natty Turner, Scattered Pages, Standing Souls, Heist at Hand, The Contingency, Nosaprise, Nine Volt, Yesterday's Portraits, Sky Blue 72, SinDaddy, Tzar Bomba, Nada Brahma, Mic Skills, The Jane Frequency, Mechanical Boy, Virgins, and Joe B and many, many more to be announced…
