Eiteljorg Museum hosts fourth annual western art show, sale
Quest for the West®attracts premier artists to the Midwest
(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Collectors and art enthusiasts from around the world are expected to attend the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art’s fourth annual Quest for the West® Art Show and Sale, an invitational art exhibition and fixed-price sale featuring some of the nation’s top Western artists. The intimate event provides a unique opportunity for veteran and novice collectors to meet and interact with artists.
Opening weekend activities, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, include the art sale, a gala reception, demonstrations and opportunities to meet participating artists. Among the honors presented during opening weekend will be a Purchase Award that will recognize creative excellence and add important artwork to the museum’s permanent collection.
Last year’s Purchase Award went to Robert Griffing for his stunning piece, Secrets of the Dark Forest. This piece depicts two Shawnee men in the eastern Woodland forest looking for changes in the terrain indicating the recent passing of game or other humans. “This ability gave woodland Indians the power to unlock the secrets of the dark forest,” said Griffing in his statement about the work.
Last year, Curt Walters was named Quest for the West Artist of Distinction, an honor that includes an exhibition during the 2010 sale and show. Walters’ exhibition is titled Moments and Monuments: The Plein Aire and Studio Paintings of Curt Walters. Considered by many to be the greatest living Grand Canyon artist, Curt Walters paints the Canyon in all its rugged beauty, in every season and from a myriad of vantage points. He depicts in color and light the lyrical, reverent awe one feels when standing before that immense, yawning Canyon. This beautiful show will be open through Dec. 13, 2009.
Reservations are required for weekend activities and participation costs $250 per person ($225 for Eiteljorg Museum members) and includes an exhibition catalog, bid book and attendance at all related events. For more information about Quest for the West or to complete a reservation form, visit www.quest.eiteljorg.org.
The exhibition of artwork will open to the public on Sunday, Sept. 13, and will remain on display until Sunday, Oct.11.
Quest for the West is part of the Eiteljorg Museum’s “Fall Roundup,” which includes WestFest (Sept. 26), a family-friendly festival celebrating of all things Western, and Buckaroo Bash (Oct. 10), the museum’s annual fund-raiser.
The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art is celebrating its 20th year of inspiring appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous peoples of North America. The museum, which opened in 1989, is located in Downtown Indianapolis’ White River State Park.
