The Original Ugly Betty, Lena Nozizwe, Signs Her Book Starring in Your Own Life at the West Hollywood Book Fair.
Award-winning broadcaster and author Lena Nozizwe shares the good, bad and ugly of being the original Ugly Betty at a book signing at the West Hollywood Book Fair Sunday, September 30th.
Emmy award-winning broadcaster and the author of Starring in Your Own Life (ISBN-13978-0-7432-1811-50 Simon & Schuster), Lena Nozizwe will be signing her book at the Screenplaylab booth at the West Hollywood Book Fair Sunday, September 30th
Nozizwe's life reads like an improbable movie plot. She almost died at birth in a tiny village in Malawi, Africa. Her family came to the United States so that her mother, Dr. Alice Princess Msumba Siwundhla, could be featured on the pioneering reality show, This Is Your Life.
Nozizwe grew up to broadcast to millions within the global village as an award-wining journalist. That's in spite of critics who told her she was too ugly to follow her dreams.
"I am the original Ugly Betty," says Nozizwe. "Having all those haters call me ugly was the worst thing that could have ever happened to me. It was the best thing that could have ever happened to me."
Nozizwe says while the taunts provoked a lot of tears, they also promoted resiliency, self-reliance and sensitivity to others.
She shares her message in her book and in her upcoming documentary Hut to Hollywood. Clips of the documentary are now featured on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbrFW-hlQak,
The Screenplay Lab is home to more than 1,900 screenwriters, filmmakers, actors. It was founded by Robin Rowe and Gabrielle Pantera.
