The art of calligraphy can be practiced by anyone who would like to know ideography. Anyone can take up a brush, follow stroke order, draw lines, and form characters. By copying masters’ samples, even a beginning student can create a fairly good piece of calligraphy. This art does not require great creative endeavor as in painting or sculpture.

On the other hand, because anyone can practice this, people can easily tell attentively drawn lines from those that were mindlessly drawn. To create a piece that many regard as outstanding requires excellence in theme choice, aesthetics, and skill. Thus, calligraphy is a profoundly creative art.

Kaz's style is full-bodied, immediate, alive. Drop ideas of artistic ability. Open the heart. Create. Express. Come experience directly the spontaneity of a single moment through brush and paint.
The retreat will include a painting performance by Kaz Tanahashi at 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 2 at Great Vow.
