Weaving In: Infill Development Strategies in Barcelona, Paris and Rome
Alfonso Valenzuela Aguilera
State University of Morelos, Mexico

Historic centers represent the founding roots of urban social life. Urban revitalization of historic areas usually brings about gentrification to different degrees. However, three recent cases in Europe demonstrate that major interventions addressing environmental, economic and social concerns are still feasible. The Piano delle Certezze in Rome, the OPAH program in Paris, and the Ciutat Vella program for the city of Barcelona were designed to permit the revitalization of urban centralities while empowering the community in the process. Weaving in social housing programs within comprehensive
strategies brought true revitalization and new life to the urban fabric.
