USC will finally play in a bowl game after a two-year bowl hiatus due to NCAA sanctions, while Georgia Tech will be playing in their second straight Sun Bowl, extending a streak to 16 consecutive seasons playing in a bowl. They fell 30-27 to Utah a season ago in El Paso, though, marking their seventh straight bowl games.

Considered by many to be the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite, senior quarterback Matt Barkley will not return to play in what will be his last game in his college career. He has been sidelined since the regular season finale against No. 1 Notre Dame with a sprained shoulder.

There's no question Barkley struggled this season, throwing a Pac-12-high 15 interceptions. His stock for the upcoming NFL Draft has dropped. The positives, however, were that he was still second in the country at 3.3 touchdown passes per game, and, in addition, averaged just under 300 yards with a passer rating of 157.6, each good for second in the conference.
