In St. Louis Smith designed several homes, but painting remained the focus of his attention throughout his life. Smith's works illustrate a keen sensitivity to the psychological resonance of gesture and color. Within his atmospheric scenes are echoes of the works of Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton and later in his career, Henri Matisse. Expressive and nuanced, his works illustrate the artist's interest in form, color and the play of light. Selected from the extensive collections of the Bellwether Foundation, the works on view reflect Smith's summer Michigan and European sojourns.
