This summer, the Walker transforms its big green back yard into a cultural commons, a park celebrating the creative assets and collective knowledge that abound in the Twin Cities. Consider this your invitation to a sprawling showcase that brings together relaxation and stimulation, recreation and exploration. Visit the newest addition to the Walker--the Open Lounge. Created in consultation with talent from the Twin Cities' design, architecture, art, and other creative communities, the Lounge transforms the Walker's Vineland Place entry area into a shady courtyard serving as the ultimate gathering place: a combination public patio, performance plaza, classroom, and outdoor bar and grill. Make your own fun by rummaging in the Open Field Tool Shed, which has free shade umbrellas, picnic blankets, books, sports equipment, art materials, and other props for checkout. The Walker has lined up an array of local thinkers, community groups, artists and other individuals for activities ranging from collective doodling and family fun to workshops, conversations, games, swap meets, and ongoing collaborative projects. Every 'Target Free Thursday Night,' stroll through the Walker's exhibitions and then stay for an evolving evening of casual conversations and art-making, plus beer, barbeque, and Commons Radio. Thursday afternoons join the Drawing Club (2-5 pm), where you can doodle, sketch, or paint with local artists--supplies are provided--and add to a pool of collectively created artworks that are gathered for display at Open Field. Free First Saturdays bring art-making activities including the Drawing Club, live music, and more for families.
