As the saying goes: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." On Saturday, April 28, men across our community will march in women’s high-heeled shoes (women and children are invited to walk as well) to get the community talking about something that's not easy to discuss: violence against women and girls.
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence, is a lighthearted, one mile walk to raise awareness around the issues of sexual assault and violence in our community.
This event provides a great forum to get people talking about the issues: it promotes discussions around preventive education; helps men to better understand and changes their perspectives on women's experiences and most importantly, it informs the community that services are available for support. Additionally, the act of men walking one mile in women’s shoes, shows they are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making the world a safer place.
The event, sponsored by L.A.C.E.Y Performing Arts Center, Wendy’s, Dover Knights of Columbus, Hennis Care Centre of Dover, Tuscarawas County Chiropractic Clinic, Kent State University Justice Studies Club, Boulevard Lanes, and McInturf Realty, Inc., will begin at J.I.M.’s Place on 228 West High Ave. in New Philadelphia. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 11 a.m. The first 50 walkers to register will get a FREE t-shirt.
If you are interested in participating in the walk, or would simply like more information, please contact COMPASS, Inc. locally at 330-339-2504.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will benefit COMPASS, Inc., an organization established to provide direction for the victims of sexual assault in Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties in Ohio. COMPASS provides victim advocacy, sexual assault prevention through community awareness and education, and support groups for sexual assault victims. In 2006, COMPASS, Inc., became an affiliate organization of Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, Inc.
