Concert Performance

Pre-concert talk 6pm

Philip Glass's Waiting for the Barbarians based on the novel by John M. Coetzee, looks at war between oppressors and oppressed. The 'barbarians' are coming. Torture is used to obtain confessions from the barbarian prisoners, thus 'justifying' the necessity for the premeditated campaign against the tribe.

'The performance, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, is dominated by Richard Salter's astonishing performance as the magistrate, on stage throughout the opera. Genuinely intriguing.'
