"Wahoo!" - Guest Artist, Kim Murton featured at High Desert Gallery. April 15, 2011

High Desert Gallery is excited to announce guest artist, Kim Murton, April 15 to June 15, 2011. “Wahoo!”exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, located at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.

Kim Murton has developed a distinctive style, ceramic sculptures that blur the line between abstract and figurative and are quirky yet delightful, peculiar yet intriguing. Her colorful, cartoon-like pieces are influenced from pre-Columbian and Mexican pottery, mixed with training and work history in animation and her love of comics. Murton is interested in repetition and the subtle differences that can happen. The color, pattern and the surface of the clay are also important aspects of her work and as well as her humor and wit. Murton coils and pinches terra cotta clay, working from the bottom up, in profile and the work is then painted with colored slips and clear glazed.

Kim studied ceramics at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and a study of film and animation at The Cooper Union School of Art in NYC. After graduating, she worked in the animation industry on staff for RO Blechman and later for JJ Sedelmaier, Jumbo Pictures and Tony Eastman. A move west led to studio work and teaching at The Firehouse Pottery Lab in Boulder, Colorado and eventually to study at Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon.

High Desert Gallery is open daily 10am to 6pm, Sunday 11am to 5pm. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
