The New York premiere of Tabligh, a cross-cultural collaborative work composed by Wadada Leo Smith and Alan Kushan. Integrating American improvisational music, Persian classical music and poetry with the Sufi devotional practice of zikr central to the work, the performance will feature Smith's Golden Quartet with Smith (trumpet), Ronald Shannon Jackson (drums), Vijay Iyer (piano) and John Lindberg (bass); and Kushan?s Rumi?s Disciple with Kushan (santur, voice), Amir Koushkani (tar, sitar, voice) and Saam (tonbak, daff). Commissioned in part by the Islamic World Arts Initiative/Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
