France, the very word conjures up a myriad of images: the elegant sweep of the Champs-Élysées as it leads to the Arc de Triomphe, a corner café with sunlight streaming through a glass of wine, cathedral spires piercing the heavens. These four illustrated lectures delve into various aspects of France, ranging from the emergence of Gothic architecture in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, to the transformation of medieval Paris into the City of Light, to the spectacular scenery and luxurious lifestyle of the Côte d’Azur.
