Based on Herv Bazin's autobiographical first novel. Jean Rzeau, who is now middle-aged, recalls his eventful childhood, beginning with the death of his grandmother in 1926. Until then, Jean and his elder brother Freddie, had had a happy life in the family's country estate, surrounded by love and every comfort. Everything changes when the boys' parents return from Vietnam (erstwhile Indo-China) and take charge of their upbringing. Jean gets rebellious, his mother tyrannical. Finding it unbearable, Jean decides she must die.
