Videos of Pueblo Indian Potters April 10, 2008

The life and work of Maria Martinez, trail-blazing pottery artist of New Mexico's San Ildefonso Pueblo, is the focus of one of two documentary videos to be shown April 10, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, 3001 Central Street, Evanston.

Martinez is credited with originating the signature blackware pottery associated with the San Ildefonso and Santa Clara Pueblo peoples. The video Maria: Indian Pottery Maker of San Ildefonso (1984, 27 minutes) shows the gathering and mixing of clay, construction of pottery, hand decorating, and building of the firing mound.

The video Daughters of the Anasazi (1990, 28 minutes) focuses on Acoma Pueblo pottery artists Lucy Lewis and her daughters Emma Lewis Mitchell and Delores Lewis Garcia. According to the videos producers, the artists make fine art Acoma pottery much the same way as their Native American ancestors, the Anasazi, did over a thousand years ago.

Mitchell Museum board members Allan and Joyce Niederman will conduct the screenings. They'll also show and discuss samples of artwork by the featured artists and by other artists working in similar styles, drawn from the museum's collection.

The event is part of the Mitchell Museum's "Film and Video Club," a monthly series of screenings of documentary and educational videos, followed by discussions. The series currently focuses on Native artists and their art.
