"VICTORY" BY ATHOL FUGARD

A powerful and moving new drama by internationally renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard about the search for hope in the "New South Africa." Two young blacks looking for cash break into the house of an elderly white man. Vicky is a teenager living in a dusty and deprived Karoo town. Led astray by her reckless thug boyfriend, Freddie, she formulates a plan to vandalize the home of Lionel Benson, the employer of her late mother. When the old man discovers them ransacking his home, an explosive, savage confrontation reveals the twisted emotional ties that bind them all.
"Victory" was inspired by a series of burglaries at Fugard's own home in South Africa - the last of which involved someone he trusted. "South Africa is in denial about its problems, busy blaming the past while taking no responsibility for the present," he says. "South Africans want to cling to the moment when the miraculous happened, and not deal with the squalor and betrayal of the present."
The London Times wrote, "Victory is at once a contained and savage thriller and a political microcosm. The sense of lives lived side by side yet worlds apart, and of the insidiousness of hierarchical social patterns, continually reasserts itself. Its essential faith in humanity and its refusal to surrender entirely to despair is fiercely beautiful."
"Victory" runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, January 25 through March 9. Tickets are $25.00. The Fountain Theatre is located at 5060 Fountain Avenue (at Normandie) in Los Angeles. Secure, on-site parking is available for $5.00.
