Vermeer: True and False
Walter Liedtke, Curator of European Paintings and the author of a monograph on Vermeer
Jonathan Lopez, the author of The Man Who Made Vermeers

Between 1887 and 1917 thirteen paintings by Johannes Vermeer and several other works wrongly attributed to him entered American collections. Continuing demand for Vermeer’s rare pictures, thirty-six are known today, created a niche market during the 1920s and 1930s for forgers, the most gifted and notorious of whom was the Dutch artist Han van Meegeren. Two specialists consider the differences between Vermeers painted in the 1650s and 1660s and "Vermeers" made in the twentieth century.
