Verdi Course: Verdi in Paris November 7, 2012

In 1894, Verdi composed his last music for the stage ballet music for the French premiere of one of his late masterpieces, Otello. Nearly half a century before, he had made his first attempt to impress the French public with Jrusalem one of his least well-known works adapting I lombardi for the stage of the Paris Opra. In the intervening years came adaptations into French of Il trovatore, La traviata and Macbeth, as well as two new works specially commissioned to coincide with the first two Expositions Universelles Les Vpres siciliennes and Don Carlos respectively. However, none of these works delivered the triumph Verdi had hoped for. For this he had to wait until 1880 when finally the French version of Aida took Paris by storm.
