Verdi and Shakespeare February 6, 2013

Completing our survey of Giuseppe Verdis operas as we enter his bi-centenary year, we come to his three settings of Shakespeare. Macbeth properly belongs to his early period, though it later underwent a radical revision for Paris. We will compare some of the very different compositional approaches used in the two versions. During his middle period, Verdi considered the possibility of setting King Lear though the project was never realised. Then, long after Aida and the Requiem were finished, came two late period masterpieces: the emotionally violent but magnificent Otello; and the light-hearted, quicksilver Falstaff, full of laughter and wisdom, which was to be Verdis farewell to the operatic stage.
