In this course, we tease out the historical contexts that produced Venetian art. The citys physical and mythological foundations are traced in large-scale cycles of paintings by the Bellini workshop, Vittore Carpaccio, Titian and Jacopo Tintoretto. Venetian artists fascination with details fabrics, hair-styles, furniture, glassware, colours is examined in light of the trading system and vibrant marketplace that led to the growth of a maritime empire. And the loss of this territory explains the inexpensive show of Palladios mainland villas for Venetian nobles, the rise of state-sponsored gambling, parties and Carnevale, and the development of Venice as a bohemian and simultaneously touristic mecca.
