Veerampattinam Car Festival is celebrated in the month of August in the fishing village of Ariankuppam. A car or chariot or 'ratha' adorned with heavily ornamented sculptures is taken out from this small village of Pondicherry. The deity of the Chengazhunir Amman Temple, 6 kms south of Pondicherry, is taken out in the early morning and returns to the temple on sun down. The celebration of Car Festival in Veerampattinam takes place on the fifth Friday of the Tamil month of Aadi or Avani, corresponding to the Gregorian month of July and August. Thousands of people flock the village to celebrate the Veerampattinam Car Festival. Though this car festival is celebrated not in the high scale like the Villianur Temple Car Festival, but still it is associated with much participation from the people of the neighboring villages. People try hard to pull the auspicious rope of the the chariot at least once. The chariot of Sengazhuneer Amman temple is also taken out and celebrated in the same way.
