New York, May 2nd - “I've heard people complaining for years," Varla Jean Merman bellowed, "that it is really hard to find a Big Top in San Francisco! So, I had to take action!" Thus, her most colorful and riddled revue to date, VARLA JEAN MERMAN'S UNDER A BIG TOP will play at the Victoria Theatre from June 1st - 10th. The show will encompass circus, carnival, magic, and freak shows. Varla will perform 6 shows only with special guests Matthew Martin and Steve Coenen. In the words of P. T. Barnum, Ms. Merman exclaimed "From the bottom of my heart, I'm a sucker! A sucker for a Big Top!"
Highlights of this madcap menagerie include: a tribute to the Bearded Lady in Christina Aguliera's BEAUTIFUL, a flashback to Coney Island in the Roaring Twenties with FRANKFURTER SANDWICHES, and who can really resist an operatic tour-de-force medley of Bizet's HABANERA and Cher's GYPSIES, TRAMPS, AND THIEVES? Well, maybe possibly Bizet. Ah, but he's dead, and "Public Domain" is a lady's best friend!
Varla Jean Merman’s Under A Big Top is written by Jeffery Roberson and Michael Schiralli, with music by David Brunetti. Directed by Michael Schiralli, this circus-magic-good time jamboree employs Varla Jean’s dizzying vocal range, dazzling costumes by Philip Heckman, a touch of processed cheese, and, most daringly, a TRAPEZE NUMBER! Let's hope the Victoria Theatre is keeping up with those insurance premiums!
