1 in 3 women will experience violence during her lifetime, most often at the hands of someone she knows. This frightening reality requires our attention and action, as individuals and as organizations, to rise and prevent any further violence of this nature in our communities. This is why Alpha Gamma Alumnae Chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (OPBSI) is proud to be a participant in the 2009 V-Day Campaign.
OPBSI is a Latina-oriented sorority founded in 1989, whose purpose is to empower women in the fight against the injustices suffered by our gender. In this our fourth year of service to the campaign, the DC Alumnae Chapter remains dedicated to helping V-Day combat incidences of rape, battery, incest, genital mutilation and sexual slavery experienced by women across the world.
V-Day is a global movement. Its purpose: to stop violence against women and girls by raising funds and awareness through an array of artistic works such as The Vagina Monologues. The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning play written by V-Day Founder and playwright Eve Ensler which has been performed all over the globe. Based off the personal experiences of over 200 women, this play is a celebration of womens sexuality and strength. Through humor and charm, the production addresses the issues of domestic violence, rape, and incest while provoking its audience with laughter, energy, and passion. The Vagina Monologuesfinally gives a voice to those experiences and feelings that for too long have been taboo.
