Welcome to everyone after a long summer. Please join us in the first meeting of this year, featuring a short presentation and our planning for the 2006 World Usability Day event.

1. Presentation: Human Conversation and Design of the Telephone

How people communicate has many implications on UI design. Bad designs are sometimes results of failed communications- the designers' intentions are not well communicated, and fail to be understood by the intended audience, the users.

The problem of designs can be illustrated by simply comparing the human-system interaction with human-human transactions. The presentations will discuss the human-conversation metaphor in the design and how a business telephone can be redesigned to be more human-friendly.

About The Presenter:

Previously a social psychologist researching human communications, Yihsiu Chen is a UI Engineer at Ayava and the current President of Usability NJ. His work in Avaya touches several types of communication products, including VoIP telephones, soft phones, and mobile devices.

2. 2006 World Usability Day (WUD) Planning

UsabilityNJ and ACM/IEEE-CS Princeton Chapter will co-sponsor the local event for 2006 World Usability Day on November 14, 2006. Our event theme is "New Jersey Innovations Make Life Easy". The WUD planning committee will report the current status. We are looking for table exhibitors, idea market participants, sponsors and volunteers for this event. Please come and join us!
