Book talk on Urbanization in China by Thomas Campanella, author of THE CONCRETE DRAGON: China's Urban Revolution and What It Means for the World, co-sponsored by Powell's Books and the Northwest China Council.

The pace of urbanization in China is very high and is having tremendous impact. In the last 30 years, the number of cities in China has increased from 200 to 700. There now are over 100 cities with populations over 1 million, ten times the number in the U.S.

Campanella is a professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; as well as Nanjing University's School of Architecture in China. In spring 2008, he is a visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Dr. Campanella also is co-editor of The Resilient City: How Modern Cities Recover from Disaster (2005).
