After competing against over 500 of NYC's hottest teen spoken word artists with nothing but a mic and their powerful voices, the top 25 poets of New York City will rant, rap and recite their own original work at the 13th Annual 'Urban Word NYC Teen Poetry Slam Finals' in front of 1,500 fans and supporters. The Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble and NYC's Youth Poet Laureate, Justin Long, will also be featured, along with beats by DJ Reborn. slam is a competition where poets perform original work of three minutes or less, without props, costumes or musical accompaniment. Youth poets, aged 13-19, advance through preliminary and semifinal rounds - hosted at some of New York's great literary and performance venues - before taking the stage at the Apollo Theater with 20 of their peers, for a chance to become one of six members of the NYC Teen Slam Team who will compete at the 2011 Brave New Voices Nationals in San Francisco this summer.
