University Lecture Series: Gro Harlem Brundtland, "Health, Environment, and Economics: The Need for Global Leadership"

Stateswoman, physician, and environmentalist, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland has worked for over twenty years promoting sustainable development, environmental awareness, and good health as a basic human right.

Dr. Brundtland received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oslo in 1963 and a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University in 1965. She worked in Norway?s national health system until her appointment as environment minister in 1974. Dr. Brundtland was elected to Norway?s Parliament in 1977 and, in 1981, was appointed Prime Minister of Norway, an office she held for nearly ten years. She gained international recognition for her work as chair of the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, whose report set the agenda for global priorities on sustainable development and led to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Brundtland served as Director-General of the World Health Organization. Brundtland?s memoir, Madam Prime Minister: A Life in Power and Politics, was published in 2002.
