United Ways partner in support local Homeward Bound Walk
The United Ways of Madison and Delaware counties are partnering in support of the local Homeward Bound walk to end homelessness by encouraging individuals and teams to participate in the 2008 5K walk-a-thon at Chesterfield’s Millcreek Civic Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27th. The local event, one of several of its kind throughout the state, will provide financial support to 14 non profit organizations in both counties that serve those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Walk team packets will be available next week at kick-off breakfast events in each county. First Merchants Bank, 201 East Jackson, Muncie is the location on Wednesday, March 5 and Madison County participants will be hosted at Millcreek Civic Center on Thursday, March 6. Both events are “come and go” beginning at 7:30 a.m. and do not require advance registration.

Individual and team registration can also be done online at www.HomewardBoundIndiana.org by clicking on the East Central Indiana location. Participant organizations will be recruiting teams in addition to the general walk recruitment. Those organizations are A Better Way Services, Inc; Alternatives, Inc.; Beauty for Ashes Transitional Home, Bridges Community Service, Christian Center Rescue Ministries, Dove Harbor, House of Hope, Learning Choices/Muncie Community Schools, Open Door Community Services, Salvation Army of Anderson, Second Harvest Food Bank, Stepping Stones for Veterans, The Center for Mental Health, Inc. and YWCA of Muncie.

Participants may support specific agencies or the entire group of agencies. “United Way applauds this type of collaborative, issue-focused effort by these organizations and we encourage groups and individuals to take advantage of the festivities that the participants are providing while supporting a very worthwhile cause,” said Nancy Vaughan, president of United Way of Madison County .

The statewide event is sponsored by Lucas Oil Products, Inc., Lilly Endowment, Inc, Enterprise, National City, Great Lakes Capital Fund, Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority and the Indiana Coalition on Housing and Homeless Issues. Local event sponsors are Community Hospital Anderson, WQME radio, First Merchants Bank, Saint John’s Health System and United Way.
